GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. THANKS FOR ENTERING!
Happy Monday, everyone! I hope you’re getting back into the swing of things, kicking butt and taking names. Today’s a big day here at Truth and Cake. Not only did I survive the Super Spartan Race without breaking anything (wasn’t sure I’d be able to make that claim today, whew!), but I’ve also taken the leap into social media.
Truth and Cake is now on Facebook and Twitter! I’ve received a few emails recently asking about my Facebook page and if I would like to connect on Twitter. And…cue the crickets. “Oh, yeah,” I’d think. “Good idea.” I often have links and cool ideas that don’t make it into a blog post that I’d like to share with you…

So, voilå! Here’s a new way for us to connect outside of the blog. I’m pretty excited and think it will be a great opportunity to interact with and get to know all of you a bit better. It’s also a place where I plan to share some of my favorite blog posts every week –I’d love to tweet about your cool ideas and wonderful writing. So, click like on my Facebook page and follow me on Twitter and let’s get this party started!
To celebrate, I’m giving away THREE copies of J.K. Rowling’s new book, “The Casual Vacancy.” It’s the book on my Fall Reading List that I’m most anxious to get my paws on. I know that many of you are just as excited about Rowling’s first foray into adult literature.

So, here’s how it works. Do one or more of the following (you get one entry for each):
1) Click here and “Like” Truth and Cake on Facebook
2) Click here and “Follow” Truth and Cake on Twitter
3) Leave a comment on this post telling me one thing that you actually look forward to on Monday mornings (what’s the bright spot that gets you through the Monday blues?–mine is coffee and an early morning walk with my husband before the day gets busy). In your comment, let me know if you also did steps 1 or 2 (I won’t be able to properly credit you otherwise).
Winners will be chosen in a random draw. The contest closes at 12 pm PST on Thursday, September 27 (that’s the day “The Casual Vacancy” is released!). I’ll announce the three winners on Friday, September 28.
*For clarification, you don’t have to do all three, you get one entry for each. Doing all three steps triples your chances of winning. REMEMBER TO LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS SECTION IF YOU DID STEPS 1 OR 2 SO I CAN CREDIT YOU WITH THE CORRECT NUMBER OF ENTRIES. And, of course, you’re more than welcome to connect with me on Facebook and Twitter without entering at all!
Thanks for playing. I can’t wait to start chatting with you on Facebook and Twitter!

I’ll go ahead and connect on FB.
Cool, your name is in the hat :)
I will be connecting on Twitter for definite. I’m very excited about the multi-social-media Truth and Cake experience!
I actually look forward to going in to work on Mondays. I’ve been lucky in getting myself jobs that I enjoy and which I gain something from/use my brain. I’ve just had a very quiet weekend staying at home doing very little – I needed the lie-in but I’m glad to be in work around people and keeping busy.
It’s so cool (and unfortunately rare) that you look forward to work on Monday, Claire! Using your brain & interacting with cool people–sounds like a great way to spend the day. Thanks for connecting on Twitter. Your name is in the hate (twice!).
Hello Rian! Liked your page and followed you on twitter. :) What gets me through Monday morning which is the start of my work week? Coffee and coffee and coffee! I go to work as early as 2 in the morning so I really need it! Hehe. I’m looking forward of the things you will share in both social media. Take care, Guen.
2 am, yikes! Bring on the coffee is right! I hope you have a good (and very caffeinated day) Guen. Take care!
Thanks! You too, take care. And got your first tweet msg. :)
I’m off to like and follow on FB an Twitter respectively :) on Mondays I actually look forward to getting caught up on reading the news (real and celebrity) while I drink my morning coffee at my desk before getting down to the “real” work :)
Yeah I do that too [plus catch up on my wordpress reading] :)
:)
I have just this second liked your FB page :) On Mondays, I look forward to the beginning of my weekly budget – while I’m at university I have a budget £50 a week, and last week was pretty typical in that I had all of 3p left by Saturday morning! So on a Monday morning I get to go to the cash point and feel rich again!
Cash, now that’s something worth waking up for! Clever girl to leave it for Monday. I remember the University budgeting days well–there was a lot of creativity involved ;) I’ve entered your name into the contest (twice). Happy Monday!
Well I liked your facebook page and followed your twitter account before I knew those were part of the giveaway [I'm anxious like that hehe] and what gets me through the Monday blues is waking up and seeing a pair of doggy eyes give me the “good morning” look. Also coffee, lots and lots of coffee [and a huge breakfast too, but that's really hush hush 'cause I'm supposed to be on a diet now]
Ahh, thanks! Oh, I’m so jealous of your Monday morning wake up–we would love to get a dog but our building doesn’t allow them. Instead I drool over every single dog I come across. Happy Monday–enjoy your big breakfast. I won’t tell.
Yay! A giveaway :-)
I clicked on Twitter and Facebook- looking forward to sharing more good stuff with you!
I love the idea of going on a walk with my fiancé on Monday mornings. I might get Nick to do it with me… although it might mean getting up earlier.
A long hot shower and a strong cup of coffee put me in a good mood to start the week.
Thanks, Cécile! It is such a nice way to start the day (as long as it’s not too cold, or in our case wet!). But we even brave the rain a lot of the time just to get outside for a bit. Coffee seems to be the magic trick for Monday morning happiness!
I’m so glad you’re doing this – I’ve been walking by an ad for the book every morning! I definitely liked your facebook page.
Monday morning: hearing the text noise and knowing my boyfriend woke up and sent me first text of the day :)
What a nice way to wake up :) Thanks–I’ve entered your name twice. Good luck!
Hellloooo! Okay, so I’m following your blog. I know you didn’t know that because I haven’t hit follow… But this wordpress is for a project I”m working on, not personal endeavors… You’ll be happy to know that you are on my bookmarks ON my web browser and have been for about a month. And now I just happen to have a wordpress to comment on your blog with. I thoroughly enjoy it. I relate to you a lot. In fact, I’ve even considered moving to Canada for a boy. And I admire you for doing it.
I ‘liked’ you on Facebook – .com/amywatkins42
And ‘followed’ you – awattykins
Here’s to Truth AND to Cake.. love em both!
Thanks so much for “secretly” following ;) It’s nice to know who’s reading. I’d love to hear more of your “almost moved to Canada” story. I’ve entered you into the contest (X 2!). Good luck!
Followed you on Facebook and Twitter. Monday mornings are coffee flavored protein shakes (energy and healthyness!) followed by yoga with my 4 year old daughter. Her favorite poses are ‘cat’ and ‘cow’ because she can sit on my back like a horse ride lol
That is way too adorable. What a great mom you are to start your daughter’s day off with something so fun. Coffee flavored protein shakes–yum. I’m going to have to look into that! Happy Monday–you’re entered (X 3!).
liked your facebook, followed you on twitter, the name is gemc200 on twitter, gemma clark on fb :) glad to see your networking, hopefully more people will discover your coolness :)
I am the most anti-morning person in the world, but the thought that I don;t have classes at Uni helps me get up – which means i can realise I have time to get some COFFEE and blogging done :) i like spending the mornings with a steamy mug, in bed, laptop on, creative brain juices for the week beginning to slosh around up there :) it’s peaceful and unpressurised, perfect monday morning combos (coffee/blogging and peace/stress release) :)
Coffee and blogging time–sounds wonderful. And in bed, no less! Thanks for following–I’ve put your name in the hat three times. Good luck!
woohoo!! thanks!! :D been really enjoying your blog for quite a while now, more people definately need to know about you :) hope the social networking goes well! :D x
Liked on FB. Followed on Twitter. As for Mondays? I love checking the mail on Mondays. No real explanation as to why, but I do. Also, absolutely coffee.
Ha, Becca–we have something in common! I love checking the mail, though Monday morning checking love has dwindled since I’ve moved to Canada. We don’t get mail on Saturdays (and almost nothing on Monday) and for some reason, come Tuesday, the mailbox is stuffed with days worth of mail. Who knows why! And yes, coffee seems to be the theme here, doesn’t it? :) Your name is in three times–good luck!
I knew I couldn’t be the only one! I should give up blogging to become an extreme couponer with all the coupons I get and throw away, but I still enjoy checking it!
followed & liked- exciting!! :)
so intrigued with this book! I devoured all the HP’s of course so curious to see how this reads.
fave Monday morning ritual: sitting down with a big pot of tea (currently Asam black), blank paper for writing down this week’s priorities & thoughts, and sifting through some good blogs before tackling the inbox.
Hey Paulina! I’m also so curious–I’m sure it will be a good read, even if it is very different–we’ll see! What a perfect way to start the week–with a blank slate. I also try (read: force myself) not to tackle email first thing. Otherwise it can take over! Happy Monday, enjoy your tea! Your name is in the hat X 3.
I need to create pages for the blog on FB and Twitter. So far, my FB is only personal and my twitter is an abomination that I would be mortified to share with people. This will have to be a mat leave project!
Oh, I know–it feels like such a daunting project when you start. But it’s actually pretty fun once you sit down and get going. Now I just need to get posting/tweeting! I was checking out your blog yesterday–everything is so fun and upbeat. Good luck with all of the preparations. Is this baby #2?
Thank you!!! I’m still a work in progress, but I have much hope!
It is, indeed, baby #2. The Toddler Tornado has quite a surprise in store for her!
Good luck with your posting/tweeting! I’ll be looking to add you as soon as I have somewhere to add you from.
I can’t wait to hear about your race :)
Just connected on FB and Twitter – great idea! I love the giveaway; I just sat down to read your Cake List post and your reading list is fantastic; and added Casual Vacancy to my wish list on Amazon :) Monday morning always seems to come too quickly, but I kick off the week with a large cup of coffee {check!] and making sure I’ve got my kiddo’s lunches for the week mapped out {check!}.
Morning, Bonnie! We get our professional race pics next week so I may do a little recap then. The short version: it was a lot of uphill trail running and I have a bit of grandma hip as a result. But it was super fun and easier than I thought it would be! Coffee seems quite popular around here :) I hope you have a great Monday! Your name is in the hat X 3!
Thanks Rian! I’ll keep my fingers crossed :)
Fantastic news! I plan to connect to you on FB asap. I love finding new, interesting blogs to follow.
And sometimes the only thing that gets me through Monday mornings is knowing that I have enough Diet Coke at my disposal to keep me awake. And, of course, I will have the season premiere of Castle to look forward to tonight! :)
Oh, is that tonight? My husband will be so excited–it’s his favorite show. Thanks for the reminder!
Step 1 – Done!
Step 2 – Done!
Step 3 – I love starting a fresh new week, with all the possibilities that lay ahead. I don’t think about it like “ugh, another monday”, I think “yay! Monday! How many awesome things can happen this week?!?!” It’s so much more fun to start the week that way!
Great attitude. Hope your week is off to a great start! You’re entered in the giveaway X 3.
Wooh hoo! I’ll admit that social media can have it’s faults, but it’s also a great way to connect (even more) with people all around the world. I love learning from new people and being inspired by their thoughts. I am so thrilled that Truth and Cake is now on Facebook and Twitter! I’ve “liked” and “followed”, but you don’t need to enter me in the giveaway. I don’t think it would be very fair since I’m still working away at “The Creative Habit” (it is AWESOME so far by the way!) from the last giveaway. Happy Monday, Rian :)
Thanks, Amber! I’m really looking forward to connecting with you guys more. Twitter is like an entirely new (and faster) world–it’s so cool seeing what everyone is up to. And I’m so glad you’re enjoying The Creative Habit. It’s one of my faves! Have a great week!
I’m stil way behind the times in social media so I’m only able to do #3. What gets me started on Mondays? I walk early, while it’s still quiet in the city, before the traffic and just after the sun rises.
Love your blog! Congrats on your recent foray into social media. ..and who knew J.K. had a new book! (clearly I don’t pay attention.)
Monday Monday… well, I guess I look forward to the fact that I can blame everything on Monday. Forgot to run a report? Must be a Monday. Late to a meeting? Must be a Monday. Can’t add correctly? Must be a Monday. =)
I’ve liked T&C on Facebook twice (my personal page and my blog’s page) because I just can’t bring myself to join Twitter. I don’t know why I have such an aversion, but I leave tweeting to everyone else.
Question: Would you be willing to offer winners a choice between an ebook or a physical book? It would save you a ton in shipping! =)
Hey Jessica–thanks for the double like! I was also wary of Twitter for a long time, but I’m enjoying the quick, informal nature of it, and the links–so, so many links! I understand that it’s one more thing to keep up with though. I would absolutely be willing to offer an ebook version–I’ll be asking the winners which they prefer. Thanks for the suggestion! Hope your week is going well.
I did both FB and Twitter connections. What gets me through on Mondays? Getting ready to write a new blog post of my own! Love your work, Rian… never miss reading it.
Hi Sue–thanks for connecting! I really appreciate your ongoing support. Hope your week is off to a great start!
I just went over and “followed” you on Twitter. Looking forward to all of your insightful tidbits!
As for Monday mornings, for me it’s that first sip of hot, sweet tea. I never got the hang of coffee but tea, oh I love my tea. And for some reason the nastier the Monday, the colder the weather, the darker the sky, the better that first sip tastes!
And I’ve just never gotten the hang of tea, though I still try ;) Thanks for the follow–I look forward to connecting with you! Your name is in the hat twice.
1) Liked your Facebook.
2) Followed you on Twitter.
3) The first three Monday’s of the month I get pumped knowing I’ll be speaking with coaching clients. I coach by phone worldwide. On the fourth week of the month I look forward to marketing. This is when I reach out to people on social media and have phone conversations or local meets. These are usually people I’m speaking to for the first time. Most people want to connect electronically. Boring! I like to have a phone convo or a Skype call to find out what they’re all about. Rian, would you like to talk? ;-p
What a go-getter you are! I’ve done nothing today except pretty much watch QVC…and why aren’t I reading? GAH. I’ll follow you on Facebook, but my screen name here and my Twitter name are different. Don’t use much the Facebook. :)
Ha, did you buy anything cool? Cause I can see the productivity in that ;) Thanks for connecting!
So, errrr. I guess you need my Twitter screen name? HAH. @zheatherchamp
Thanks!
Steps one and two? Done and done. Hmm.. What gets me through monday mornings is when I find the time to take a peek at my latest book, which right now is a romantic novel. Nothing is better than finding more time to read a great, twitterpating, story. :)
Definitely connecting on Facebook :)
Yay, glad to see you posting, you were missed!!! Liked on fb and following on twitter (Ruth S… ;))
Have my posts not been showing up for you? I know this one went to a lot of people’s spam folders (probably the word giveaway), but I’ve been posting every week. Let me know if there’s an issue with the reader or email & I’ll try to get it resolved. Thanks for connecting. I’ve entered your name twice. Take care!
Hi! Oh, please – you don’t need me in the lottery – i am very far away and it’s too expensive to mail anything here, please don’t! No, they don’t show in my reader :(
Hi Ruth, thanks for letting me know! I’ve had that happen with some blogs I follow and it’s usually fixed by hitting “Unfollow” and then “Follow” again. If that doesn’t work, let me know and I’ll send it on to WordPress. Hope you’re having a great week.
Thank you for the tip, i did the unfollow/ follow , hope it works now! (ill let you know by mid next week, i am in Hungary right now and the internet connection in the hotel is lousy!)
Rian,
I am supporting you on Facebook! I’m so happy for you for making the social media leap. Best of luck!
On Monday mornings, I look forward to chai tea and watering my office poinsettia (I adopted it because the office nearly let it die of thirst, then wanted to pitch it when it wasn’t seasonal anymore – abuse! cries the treehugger). It’s silly, but it makes me happy to see it thriving.
Lovely to see you branch out to other forms of social media! I did follow you on both Facebook and Twitter :)
Luckily, my Monday mornings aren’t as spastic as others. I don’t have class until 7 p.m. I normally look forward to waking up slowly and getting my workout on.
I am sooo excited you are on Facebook! I don’t Twitter but even if I don’t win a book I look forward to your review. You are a sweetheart!
Oooopps forgot. Monday’s have become the start of a fresh new white piece of paper to write on. Coffee helps too.
Hi Riann. Glad to learn that you’re taking your writing out even farther in the social media world. You’re an excellent writer, and I look forward to your posts. I will definitely connect with you on Facebook. In regards to what I look forward to on Mondays, the answer is: an early morning walk with my dog, and about 15 – 20 minutes of reading a good book while I drink my coffee. Cheers!
I have liked on FB. Twitter is giving me fits tonight. I guess, if I get in, I will drop you another comment.
As for Mondays, my usual, is to get up, fix breakfast, take my meds, and do email and check my blog for comments and such. I think my Mondays go best when I get to check my blog and enjoy the number of views I have had and see that, while I slept, the waking world took some notice of me. Since I don’t formally work, each day is a lot alike. This ritual gets me through all of them.
Scott
Ok, did make it on Twitter and followed you. The FB and Twitter have been good choices for me; I hope they do as well for you!
Scott
Reciprocity….If you like things about biz, brains, and the bizarre, LIKE me at End Game Business on FB, and Steve Borek on Twitter.
Danka.
Hey Rian , Have liked you on Facebook . My thoughts are a bit too unfocussed for twitter .
As I am unemployed now , its hard to come out of the morning blues and face the rest of uncertainties the day has to offer . But usually I bake a cake or spent some time reading food blogs !
Liked you on FB! Haven’t mastered Twitter yet and not sure if I want to…what gets me through Monday mornings? Well, the things that get me UP are normally the 6-year olds (they are big dark o’thirty fans!). The thing that keeps me going is habit. And maybe a nice 10am hazelnut hot chocolate…
What gets me going on Mondays is that they are a fresh new week full of the potential to be perfect and for me to meet all the goals I fell down on the week before. I haven’t eaten too much salt yet or skipped the gym yet or gotten cranky at someone on the bus yet or forgotten to write a blog post yet. Every Monday I feel like, “Yes! This will be the week when I get my act together!” It’s sort of like New Year’s resolutions but a lot more often.
I also followed you on Twitter. :)
I added you to my Twitter feed. What gets me going on Monday is the quiet at work after a noisy, crazy weekend with my two kids
Not sure if I’m too late because of the time difference from Australia but now that the weather’s getting hotter in Brisbane, I always look forward to having a nice big cup of iced coffee before I’m on my way to class. I do miss Tim Hortons but learned to love how they put a scoop of ice cream in their iced coffees here. It’s delicious and gets me through Mondays!
p.s. love your blog
(also did steps 1 and 2 :) )
