It was Hemingway who said, “As you get older it is harder to have heroes, but it is sort of necessary.” I think this is true–as our experiences fill in the gaps in our judgment, we tend to think we have things figured out and turn less to the outside world for advice.
Sometimes I find myself needing a dose of wisdom from a person (like Hemingway) who’s been around the bull ring a few times. So, here’s the first in an occassional series called “Words to Live By,” quotes from people who view(ed) the world with eyes wide open.

Happy Friday! I hope your weekend is full of inspiration, fun and plain old relaxation!

Love this guy! Thanks for putting these together in one place!
Me too. You bet! Have a great weekend, Jane.
Thanks so much for the INSPIRATION – Happy Friday:)
Love these – so inspiring, encouraging, and such wise advice. The first one is such a great challenge; and makes a ton of sense. Thanks for this – great post!
The first one is challenging, isn’t it? But it’s so simple and wise. Have a great weekend, Bonnie!
Love Hemingway. <3 This post was just what I needed today, Rian. Thank you. :)
Gold! Absolute gold! I love the one “There is no nobility in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility comes from being superior to your former self.” I am totally inspired – thank you :)
I also love that one :)
This post was just what I needed. Even stuck here with the body and mind I have, this week has sailed by and yet I have gone through a great many trials. I have needed a hero. This post was a breath of fresh air.
Scott
Glad it gave you a little boost, Scott. I often find myself in need of a shot of wisdom at the end of a busy week. It puts things in perspective.
Great idea, Rian. I love the way you put words and pictures together- very attractive. Have a good weekend :-)
Thanks, Cécile. I hope you get ( and have gotten, have to remember that time change!) plenty of rest and fun in this weekend–looks like you’ve been a busy lady ;)
Reblogged this on savannahpearls.
Thanks!
good words. Makes me want to research Hemmingway. I guess being forced to read the Old Man and The Sea at too young of an age probably didn’t do it for me.
Fabulous collection of words from one of my story-telling heroes.
It’s so touching and valuable post for my weekend.
I must confess that Hemmingway has always been admired from afar for me. Your collection of inspirational words, however, is pulling him closer. Thank you, Rian! I’ve bookmarked a few of his Paris haunts to visit next month :)
