Have you watched the commencement speech Neil Gaiman gave at The University of the Arts last spring? It’s been floating around this week on Upworthy and Facebook and Twitter. If you haven’t, check it out when you have twenty minutes to spare. You can watch or read it here. The speech is full of many great tid-bits and life lessons, especially for those of us who make art or are freelancers. But this part, near the end of his speech, stopped me dead in my tracks: When I agreed to give this address, I started trying to think what the best advice I’d been given over the years was. And it came from Stephen King twenty years ago, at the height…

Oh, hi. Hello there. Did you do something different with your hair? I like it. There was a bit of radio silence on the blog while I was away at a beach reunion with my college friends. Instead of blogging, I was doing really boring stuff like swimming and laughing and eating vodka-filled watermelons. You know, basically pretending I was a teenager again. We all need those moments, the ones where we forget our responsibilities and say, “To hell with age spots, I’m going to wait one whole hour before I apply sunscreen so that I don’t look like a 31-year-old marshmallow.” So that’s what I was doing: remembering what it’s like to feel tan and reckless and 21 instead of 31…

Tonight I’m heading out to watch Prince play at a small 1,100 seat theater. I’m over-the-moon-ecstatic about the singing, dancing and happiness that’s sure to ensue. Unfortunately, grooving to Prince doesn’t come cheap. When I told people I was going to the concert, I received one of two reactions: “Whoa, that’s expensive” or “Whoa, you love Prince, that’s going to be awesome.” I nodded my head to both reactions because I understand that Prince isn’t awesome to everyone but that he is awesome to me. It’s a somewhat pricey experience, but one that will undoubtedly raise my happiness quotient. I didn’t always think that way. Historically, when faced with a choice between something cheap and something expensive, I would…

The weekend is here and I’m dreaming of airplanes, beaches and far off, exotic destinations. I’ll admit, I suffer from a near constant state of wanderlust. Alas, those endless buckets of money I ordered still haven’t come in–wonder what’s taking them so long? ;) In case you’re stuck at home this weekend (like moi), here’s a little virtual vacation courtesy of our easter weekend trip to Salt Spring Island–it’s the largest of the gulf islands, nestled between the mainland and Vancouver Island in the Salish Sea. Four years in Vancouver and Grant and I had never made the trip, so we decided to hop a ferry, bikes and picnic basket in tow, and do a little exploring… Salt Spring is made up…

Grant and I met a really lovely young couple last weekend while staying at a bed and breakfast. They’re both in medical school but neither of them have decided what they want to specialize in. They know they want to be doctors, but do they want to: work with kids or adults, handle emergencies, clock crazy long hours, have a family? They keep rigorous schedules and take tons of difficult exams, giving up most of their free time and living in separate cities in order to achieve something that doesn’t yet have a name. They are walking forward, trusting that by the time they have to make a decision, they will know the answer. Anyone who’s ever pursued something challenging, changed career…

Roger Ebert, celebrated film critic, author and Pulitzer Prize winner, lost his battle with cancer today. Already a professional writer at the tender age of fifteen, Ebert would go on to shape the way we view movies, deepening our love and appreciation of cinema like no one else before him. For Ebert, movies were more than just quick snippets of entertainment–they were the ultimate metaphor for life. An opinionated, savvy, and original thinker, his words reveal more about who he was and what he stood for than any obit can. Here’s an excerpt from his beautiful essay, “I Do Not Fear Death,” republished on Salon today: “I was perfectly content before I was born, and I think of death as the same…

Winters in the Pacific Northwest are famously dreary and grey. It’s not the inconsistent, drizzly rain that gets to me, but the weeks without sun, the sky that feels like its grazing the top of my head. By the time February rolls around, I’m usually ready to crawl out of my skin. The light boxes and vitamin D supplements and temporary trips to tropical locales do little to assuage my craving for sun. Some people shrug their shoulders and say, “It doesn’t bother me, I like the rain.” And to those people, I say, Bravo. I wish. I’m a sun baby. I spent my childhood in California, accumulating a speckle of odd-shaped freckles that grace my shoulders to this day.
Truth and Cake is celebrating its first birthday! I have this little five year journal where I write a few lines each day. It’s a writer’s trick so that I don’t forget dates and places and important things when I sit down to write about them, but it’s also pretty illuminating to compare what you were doing and thinking about a year (or two or three) ago to what you’re doing today. On February 29 (leap year), I wrote in my little journal, “Do I want to start a blog?” One week later, I wrote, “Yes.” And on March 26, after a cupcake/ pig photoshoot and a little html tinkering, I hit publish on my first ever blog post. Two days later,…

Sometimes I think, if I could just check every last item off of my to-do list, I would finally be able to think clearly. The world would spread out before me like a big blank canvas, and I would feel limitlessly creative and free. When I was in real estate, my to-do list was a never-ending, never-enough-time-in-the-day futile exercise in completion. Checking one thing off usually meant adding three more in its place. My personal to-do list sat dusty and neglected somewhere underneath my half eaten lunch, mocking me. If I got to the grocery store in the evening and my phone didn’t ring after 10 pm, that was a good day. Now that I have more time and energy to devote…

It was Hemingway who said, “As you get older it is harder to have heroes, but it is sort of necessary.” I think this is true–as our experiences fill in the gaps in our judgment, we tend to think we have things figured out and turn less to the outside world for advice. Sometimes I find myself needing a dose of wisdom from a person (like Hemingway) who’s been around the bull ring a few times. So, here’s the first in an occassional series called “Words to Live By,” quotes from people who view(ed) the world with eyes wide open. Happy Friday! I hope your weekend is full of inspiration, fun and plain…
